Your First Gym Visit: A Practical Checklist Before You Train
Before your first gym visit, check how to get in, when staff are available, whether you need an induction and what the gym asks you to bring. Give yourself a small, clear plan for arrival rather than trying to work out every detail at the door.
You do not need a finished training programme to ask where the lockers are. Getting familiar with the space, meeting a staff member and understanding how to ask for help are useful things to arrange before you train.
1. Check access before you leave
A gym's opening hours and staffed hours may be different. Look up both, especially if you want a tour or help on your first visit. The Gym Group, for example, offers pre-joining tours during staffed hours; check the arrangements at your own gym rather than assuming reception is always attended.
Confirm these four details:
- Entry: do you need an active card, app, PIN or booking confirmation?
- First-visit process: must you book an induction or check in with reception?
- Help: who can you contact if the door or membership access does not work?
- Getting there: which entrance should you use, and are there any access arrangements you need to ask about?
Save the gym's contact details before travelling. If entry depends on a phone, check the app and login beforehand. PureGym's getting-started guide, for instance, explains its app and PIN entry options. Your gym may use a different system.
2. Pack for that gym, not an imaginary perfect session
Read the venue's kit and locker requirements. A practical starting list is comfortable training clothes, suitable trainers, water and whatever your gym requires for lockers or equipment hygiene. Do not assume towels or locks are supplied: PureGym specifically tells members to bring a padlock.
Choose clothes you can move in without constant adjustment. A familiar outfit is a reasonable place to start; there is no need to buy a completely new one just to find your way around. If you are deciding how much coverage or layering you prefer, our guide to wearing a compression top on its own or under another layer offers a whole-outfit check.
3. Ask for a useful introduction
Book an induction or introductory appointment if the gym offers one. Tell staff that it is your first visit, even if you have exercised elsewhere.
You can keep the question simple: “It's my first time here. Could you show me where to put my things, explain the gym's etiquette and tell me how to get help with equipment?”
Ask about anything the induction has not covered. The Gym Group's health and safety guidance tells first-time gym users to book a kickstart session and ask staff for an equipment demonstration. If you are unsure how to use something and no qualified staff member is available, leave it until you can get that guidance rather than guessing.
4. Decide what this visit is for
Make the plan manageable and specific. You might book an induction, arrange a tour or ask staff to help you understand the space and the next step. Check what your membership or booking permits.
Before leaving, note anything still unresolved: a locker rule, how to book a class or who can explain an unfamiliar machine. That gives your next visit a starting point. You do not have to solve every gym question at once.
Your first-visit checklist
- Opening hours and staffed hours checked.
- Entry method active and ready.
- Induction or first-visit booking confirmed, if required.
- Entrance, travel and any access arrangements checked.
- Clothes, trainers, water and venue-required kit packed.
- Locker requirements checked.
- Gym contact details saved.
- One clear question ready for staff.
Keep this list on your phone, fill in the details for your gym and confirm anything missing before you go. The practical next step is knowing where to start and whom to ask.
