How to Wash a Compression Top After Training

Start with the sewn care label, wash a sweaty top promptly, and choose settings the label allows. If it still smells afterwards, check your load, detergent dose and drying routine before increasing heat or adding more products. A useful laundry routine should be repeatable, not a new experiment after every workout.

This guide is for everyday training apparel made with stretch fibres. It is general garment-care guidance, not a replacement for the instructions supplied with your particular top. Athletic Skins' current Enduro product page lists elastane and recycled polyester, but does not publish a wash temperature or drying programme. Check the label inside your garment; if it is missing or unclear, ask us before choosing a temperature, treatment or dryer setting.

Why this is a practical training problem

A top can feel ready for your next session while its laundry routine remains a guess. In an August 2026 public laundry discussion, one person described gym clothes that smelled fresh after one wash routine but not another. The replies offered conflicting combinations of products. That is one person's experience, not evidence of how common the problem is, and the mixture is not a recommendation.

The useful question is smaller: what can you check, within your garment's instructions, before changing several things at once?

1. Make the label your starting point

Photograph the care label while it is readable. Keep the image somewhere you can find it on laundry day. Note the permitted wash temperature, drying symbols and any treatment restrictions. A number on the wash symbol is a limit for that item; do not borrow a setting from a different brand's shirt.

Under Armour's compression-shirt guide also starts with the tag. Its general routine includes washing inside out, cold water, a gentle cycle, mild detergent and similar lightweight fabrics. It advises avoiding fabric softener and chlorine bleach. These are useful comparison points, not verified instructions for every Enduro garment.

2. Give the top its own place in the routine

After a sweaty session, separate the top from the rest of your kit rather than forgetting it inside a closed bag. If you cannot wash immediately, arrange your kit so you remember which items still need washing. Airing is an interim step, not proof that a worn item is clean.

Nike's leggings care guide recommends washing after training or airing the garment, lower-temperature washing, turning it inside out, avoiding softener and hanging it promptly. The guidance is for Nike leggings; it reinforces the value of a consistent routine without establishing your top's permitted settings.

Before the next wash, check pockets, fasten any permitted closures and group items according to their labels and colours. Under Armour suggests keeping compression shirts away from jeans, towels, exposed zips and hook-and-loop fasteners; it mentions a mesh bag when protection is needed.

3. If odour remains, change one thing at a time

Start with a brief record: which top, which programme, detergent and dose, load size, and how it was dried. You do not need a spreadsheet. A note beside the label photo is enough to make the next wash deliberate.

What you notice What to check next
Several items in the load smell musty Check the machine's cleaning instructions and whether the load stayed wet after the cycle. Follow the appliance maker's maintenance guidance.
Only one top remains unpleasant Recheck that garment's label and the detergent's directions. Keep the next trial within those instructions.
You changed the dose, programme and additives together Return to a clearly recorded, label-compatible routine. Change one permitted variable so the result tells you something useful.
You are considering a hotter wash or a new treatment Check both the garment label and the treatment directions first. If either is unclear, ask before using it.

More detergent is not automatically a better wash: Under Armour cautions that excess can leave residue. Use the product's dosing directions for your load and water conditions. Avoid improvising mixtures of cleaning products; follow each product's safety instructions.

4. Finish with the drying instructions

Read the drying symbol separately from the washing symbol. A shirt that can go into the washing machine is not automatically suitable for a tumble dryer. Under Armour allows low heat or air drying in its guide, whereas 2XU's Core Compression Short Sleeve care section says not to tumble dry. This difference is exactly why your own label controls the choice.

Once the garment is dry, look at the seams, fabric and hem before putting it away. If you notice damage, stop experimenting with treatments and ask the seller about the item. A care routine is not a guarantee of a particular lifespan or permanent elasticity.

A simple checklist for the next session

  • Care label photographed and readable.
  • Worn kit separated from clean kit.
  • Wash and drying settings checked against that label.
  • Detergent dose checked against its directions.
  • Top fully dry before storage.
  • One recorded change if the previous wash was unsatisfactory.

If you are also checking how your top feels during movement, use our five-move fit check. Fit and garment care are different checks; one does not replace the other.

Choose a top, then know its care routine

The Enduro Black/Blue long-sleeve top is listed with light compression, four-way stretch, knitted elastane and recycled polyester, six-needle construction and a stay-put hem band. Those are the product specifications, not a tested laundry outcome. View the Enduro Black/Blue top and its current sizes, and keep the supplied care label with your routine.
